Hello fellow travellers! I hope you smiled your way through the last fortnight. The good news is that scientific research is now replete with evidence that happiness can be cultivated. It is just a matter of acquiring a new habit… . Not only will a person be happier but this new ‘habit’ will also significantly lower our chances of succumbing to coronary artery disease, diabetes, arthritis and even cancer.

Medicine has advanced phenomenally since the middle of the 20th century. Along with improvement in nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, man has seen a rise in life expectancy from 35 years in the 19th century to well above 80 years in the current century. Our standard of living, our quality of life, our level of knowledge has never been higher. Are we then the happiest too? For all events and purposes, it would seem so. What is there to grouse about? Technological and economic advances have undoubtedly made life easier - in fact, we are lucky to be alive in this century... . We should be the happiest, most chilled out generation of homo sapiens of all time! But is that so?
