BBC Earth has recently produced a three part series called Wild Arabia and I was given a DVD copy for my birthday a couple of months ago. Management and I settled down to watch, and we were immediately hooked. Each of the three episodes is an hour long, and the series claims to be the first to reveal the wildlife, wild places and extraordinary people of the vast Arabian peninsula.

Being an entrepreneur is on the minds of many young people, as they read about the new initiatives and funding opportunities that seem to be opening up in the sultanate to help them to achieve their dreams. The National Youth Commission has come out in support of small and medium enterprises to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship, and last year the Muscat Youth Summit held in December had 37 workshops designed to inspire the young with new opportunities.

Accident record

The newspapers have been full of reports of the number of road traffic accidents and Oman’s dismal record in comparison with other countries. Muscat Daily on May 9 headlined that road accidents for the beginning of 2013 were up 19.9 per cent in 2012.

I was reading an article in the UK version of The Week, first published in the British The Observer newspaper. Entitled ‘The secrets of our working lives,’ the piece quoted from seven anonymous workers about the perks and pitfalls of their jobs.

The British are notorious for their ability to talk non-stop about the weather. If a farmer sees his cows all sitting down in his field, then rain is on the way. “Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight” say others, meaning it will be sunny the following day.
