ESO launches Ecological Footprint themed campaign
As part of its ongoing Education Programme, the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) in partnership with Petroleum Development Oman, launched its ‘Ecological Footprint’ campaign to educate schoolchildren on the importance of preserving the environment.
With the help of its volunteers, ESO reached out to 21 government schools around the sultanate and provided students with a presentation detailing simple behaviours that affect the environment and how to protect natural resources, stated a press release.
The presentations were followed by recycling activities to provide the students with insight into how their everyday actions can have a major impact on the world around them.
Jawaher al Ghafri, education coordinator, said, “We believe that building a more sustainable future begins with raising awareness, and with this theme we are targeting the youth of today. To preserve the environment and prepare the next generation for their role as stewards of Oman’s natural wonders, it is important that we do our utmost to educate them on how the simplest activities can have an impact on the environment.”
ESO’s themed Education Programme began in 2015 and has since covered the three themes, ‘Energy Saving’, ‘Oman’s Biodiversity,’ and ‘Ecological Footprint’, added the release.
The fourth theme will be ‘Green Schools’ which will be launched later this year to continue the programme’s mission in empowering thousands of students aged between 11 and 14 with knowledge of conservation techniques, sustainable practices, climate change and the importance of biodiversity.
