Expat numbers drop to lowest since 2015
Expatriate numbers in Oman have dropped under 2mn, the lowest they have been since July 2015.
According to National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total population of the sultanate on September 8, 2019 was 4,667,602.
At 2,669,170, Omanis constituted 57.2 per cent while expatriates comprised 1,998,432. NCSI statistics also show that the sultanate’s population increased between mid-2012 and mid-2018 by about 978,000 to reach 4.6mn people.
Expatriate workers by the end of 2018 stood at 1,787,447. However, by July 2019, the numbers went down by 41,764 to reach 1,745,683 expatriate workers. Bangladeshi workers formed the largest expat community at 645,883, followed by Indians at 634,057 and Pakistanis 210,661, by July 2019.
