Experts say creating public awareness key to prevent fires at home, establishments

Experts have urged the need to create awareness on preventing fire in houses and commercial buildings after three such incidents in less than a week.

On Monday, a girl suffered burn injuries in a house in the Hamiraa area in Shinas. In another incident, an Omani woman was injured in a fire in a house in Liwa.

On Thursday, ten members of an Omani family died of asphyxiation while they were asleep in the wilayat of Saham.

Experts participating in the Oman Fire, Safety and Security Expo said on Monday that fires mainly occur due to lack of safety culture and non-installation of fire detection systems.

Speaking to Muscat Daily , Al Khatab Aqil al Farsi, senior sales engineer, fire and safety, Al Khoory Fire and Safety Equipment, said, “I hope the authorities strictly ensure that building owners install fire and smoke detectors to ensure people’s lives are protected.”

Shathan Badar Ali al Shaibani, sales executive, Al Saidi Engineering & Trading, said, “We can avoid fires in many ways. Installing fire detection systems and using fire resistance doors are some of the best ways to prevent fire. There is need for awareness on using fire safety equipment and having basic firefighting training among people.”

Shihab Muhammed Samhan, chief executive, Shihab Muhammed Said Abdullah Samhan Trading Establishment said, “We sell smart fire extinguishers. Our aim is to create awareness among visitors on using firefighting equipment. These devices are not expensive. A few rials can save many lives.”

Shaibani said that there is a need to create awareness among students in schools and universities through social media channels. “People should also buy only well-known electrical appliances to prevent short-circuits. All our products are made in Oman. Our firm offers many devices such as fire extinguishers and fire-resistant doors.”

Farsi added, “We are participating in this exhibition for the first time. We offer conventional fire alarm system and wireless fire alarm system. We have expertise in installing smoke detectors at homes.”

The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances has advised everyone to install and periodically check fire alarms in their houses to prevent tragic incidents from happening in future.
