It’s a world record: 530 in Oman do 108 sun-salutations
A mass yoga programme in Oman involving 530 participants performing the sun-salutation (surya namaskar) 108 times has made it to the 2019 edition of the Limca Book of World Records. The news of the record was released at the Indian embassy premises by Rakesh Adlakha, Deputy Chief of Mission, Indian Embassy on Friday.
The record from Oman is of the highest ever number of participants taking part in a mass yoga programme outside India.
The mass yoga event took place last year at the Shangri-La Barr al Jissah Resort and Spa’s Amphitheatre under the umbrella of Vyaniti Yoga Studio in association with Oman Cancer Association (OCA).
The aim of the event was to raise awareness on cancer prevention and highlight the role yoga plays in keeping oneself fit physically and emotionally.
Speaking about the event, Prema Nagesh, founder of the association, said, “On verification after the conclusion of the event it was found that 485 participants had achieved their goal: fully completing 108 sets of the sun-salutation. This was a first-of-its-kind attempt in the Middle East. The participants were from a mixed age group with some as young as six years and some as old as 85 years.”
Prema also thanked the chief guest, H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki bin Mahmoud al Said, and India’s oldest yoga teacher, 99 year old, Padma Shri Nanammal, Dr Wahid al Kharusi, president and chairperson, OCA, Yuthar al Rawahy, founder and honorary life president, OCA.
