MoAF extends fishing, trade ban on sea cucumbers

February 10, 2019

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) has prohibited fishing, trading and the possession of sea cucumbers for two more years.

The decision (No 25/2019) was issued by H E Dr Fuad bin Jaafar bin Mohammed al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, on February 3, 2019.

The ministry had issued a similar decision (No 69/2018) on sea cucumbers for a period of one year on March 19, 2018.

According to Article 1 of the decision (No 25/2019), fishing of sea cucumbers in all Omani fishing waters is banned starting from March 27, 2019, for a period of two years. Any type of activity – whether transportation, storage, purchase, sale and export – of sea cucumbers is prohibited during this period.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an official source at MoFA said, "The temporary ban has been issued for several reasons, including assessing the number of sea cucumbers in the sultanate’s waters and finding out the volume of global demand. Sea cucumbers help preserve the marine environment."
