December 22, 2018

The two-day oil spill drill titled ‘Nawras 2018’ to test preparedness in Musandam concluded last week. The drill was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) and Oman Oil Company Exploration Production, and held in cooperation with other agencies.

The participating entities were Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ministry of Health, ROP, represented by the Operations and Coast Guard, Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances, Royal Air Force of Oman, Royal Navy of Oman, Maritime Security Centre and Oman Petroleum and Environmental Services Company.

The drill saw activation of contingency plans in combating an oil spill and test readiness to respond to the situation. This was part of the measures to combat oil spill according to the national plan as well as assess cooperation between regional and international organisations.

MECA said that the selection of Musandam governorate to implement this exercise was due to the ecological sensitivity of the site. “Musandam is rich in marine life and this makes the area very important from an environment point of view.”
