RNO takes part in EU Navfor exercise with Italian vessel
Oman’s commitment to maritime security has been clearly demonstrated alongside that of EU Navfor (European Union Naval Force) during a recent engagement at sea.
On December 1, EU Navfor’s Operation Atalanta was represented by the Italian Navy’s ITS Federico Martinengo alongside Royal Navy of Oman’s (RNO) Al Shamikh Q40 (Khareef class) as the two warships conducted in Passing Exercise (PASSEX). The event closely followed the Italian ship’s port visit to Salalah. The PASSEX activity included exchange of personnel and helicopter operations. Navies conduct such activities to help understand each other’s capabilities and to ensure they are in a state of high readiness to work together.
Commander Andrea Quondamatteo of the Italian Navy and commanding officer of ITS Federico Martinengo said recently, “Exercises and training means readiness, and keeping standards in the field of maritime security at a very high level.”
EU Navfor has continued to be in a state of high readiness since December 2008 when Operation Atalanta was launched for counter-piracy mission in the regional waters.
