State Council committee studies challenges to Arabic
A special committee, formed at the State Council, on Tuesday continued to study ‘The language policies of the sultanate, its realities, challenges and mechanisms to develop and activate them’.
The study aimed at checking the use of Arabic language in the sultanate and its challenges, and seeks to develop appropriate proposals to highlight the status of the Arabic language and promote its use in various government and private institutions. It also aims to propose a law or official document for the protection of the Arabic language and empowering its practice in the sultanate.
It also proposes a government agency that can be a reference to this document and follow up the implementation of the policies contained therein.
At the fourth meeting of the fourth annual session of the sixth period headed by Dr Rayya Salim Said al Manthari, the committee hosted a number of specialists interested in Arabic language from the Ministry of Education and National Records and Archives Authority.
The committee discussed with them many aspects of the study, including Omani efforts to serve the Arabic language, and the efforts of Omani institutions and scholars to revive it. It also discussed the national programmes and initiatives in this area, the role of the Arabic language in the economy and the knowledge industry, and addressed some international experiences in the service of the mother tongue.
