State Council hosts library owners and officials as part of its ongoing study

The State Council committee of Culture, Information and Tourism as part of its ongoing study titled, ‘The Reality of Public and Private Libraries in the Sultanate of Oman’, hosted officials and owners of libraries on Tuesday.

The intention was to highlight the educational role of libraries, which adopt multiple means of self-learning, stated a press release.

Libraries, as effective centres within the community, enable achievement of scientific and cultural growth. They promote in the community, the advantages of effectively investing time in reading. This makes it imperative to maintain the position of libraries in preserving the cultural heritage of the nation, through the collection of ancient manuscripts.
The meeting headed by Dr Ahmed bin Ali al Meshaikhi, head of the Culture, Information and Tourism committee, was held in the presence of committee members and the secretariat staff.

The eighth meeting of the committee discussed topics related to the study. This included library content, number and quality of books, availability of digital technology, number of visitors and their ages, number of employees and their qualifications, link to other libraries, its timings, location and space needed to operate.

Additionally, it touched on the relevance of its mission, and manuscripts in the library. The meeting also discussed the difficulties and challenges facing libraries and the impact of Internet and the vision for the future development of libraries, added the release.

The study comes within the framework of identifying the status of the library in the Omani society and the status it upholds, its past and present, the services and programmes provided by the library and its contribution to community development and its adaptation to the cultural, literary and intellectual needs of the society.

The meeting also delved into the development of traditional services and provision of new services related to the modern knowledge society. The meeting adopted the minutes of the previous meeting and noted the implementation of the decisions taken at the previous meeting.
