Street vendor licences only to Omanis: MoCI

May 13, 2019

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has said that street vendor licence is only issued to Omanis.

In a statement on its Twitter account, MoCI said expatriates will not be allowed to operate mobile stalls for selling mishkak, juices, ice cream and products as specified in the regulations. “The decision has been made in coordination with different bodies such as the Ministry of Manpower, ROP, Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources and the municipalities of Muscat, Sohar and Dhofar.

“We aim to offer livelihood opportunities to Omanis by allowing them to set up their own stalls. The owner, however, will be allowed to recruit expatriates as per the conditions laid out by the concerned authorities.”

According to Article 3 that regulates the operation of street vendors, the applicant has to be an Omani while Article 7 says that businesses cannot be handed over or leased out to expatriates.

MoCI has said that the number of street vendor licences has reached 398 while home business licences have touched 6,705 at the end of April 2019.
