Sultanate awarded ‘Best International Destination for Adventure Tourism’ in India
After being recognised as a great wedding destination by the Indian tourism market, the sultanate has been bestowed with an award for being the ‘Best International Destination for Adventure Tourism’ by an Indian travel and tourism publication.
Now in its seventh year, Travel+Leisure India & South Asia’s annual luxury travel event India’s Best Awards (IBA) was held at a glittering event at ITC Maurya, New Delhi, recently. The award was handed over to Lubaina Sheerazi, India representative of the Ministry of Tourism, Oman.
Travel+Leisure launched the first edition of IBA in 2011 with 42 categories in the international and domestic domain in an attempt to recognise key players from the travel and tourism industry. Currently, it is the brand’s biggest and one of the country’s finest annual luxury events.
Themed around ‘India’s Best in Class’ and in line with the legendary ‘World’s Best Awards’ held by the US edition of Travel+Leisure, its readers are invited to vote online for their favourite luxury hotels, resorts, spas, destinations, airlines, cruise lines, travel companies and more. This year, IBA had over 50 categories.
The Ministry of Tourism announced the news stating that the sultanate has won Best International Destination for Adventure Tourism at IBA, presented by Travel & Leisure. Lubaina said, “We receive the award with immense pleasure and are grateful to be recognised as the best adventure destination. We would like to especially thank all the people who voted for Oman for its authenticity, stunning beauty and rustic adventure activities.
“This has come at a great time where Oman has witnessed 173,833 arrivals for the period from January to June 2018 with a cumulative growth of over 15 per cent over the same period last year. We are looking forward to next year where we hope to see a greater number of travellers from India exploring Oman.”
Since 2014, Oman has witnessed a growth of over 31 per cent in Indian arrivals. In 2017 alone, Oman received 321,161 Indian visitors, showcasing a growth of over seven per cent in one year.
Some of the other global names that made it to the big list include Dubai and Bangkok getting the award for Best City; Best Emerging Destination - Israel and Denmark; Best Heritage Destination - Peru and Greece; Best Honeymoon Destination - Maldives and New Zealand; Best MICE Destination - Abu Dhabi and Tokyo; Best Wedding Destination - Tuscany and Bali; and Best Family Destination - New South Wales and Singapore.
Earlier this year in May, Oman’s Ministry of Tourism office in India was presented a prestigious award for its contribution in showcasing the country as a wedding destination.
