Letter to the editor: Violence rocks southern Indian state

January 08, 2019

(Muscat Daily, Jan 6, page 7)

It is quite unfortunate that a civilised society in the state of Kerala, carrying the tagline ‘God’s Own Country’, has been seeing massive protests in the past few days involving various political parties.

Political parties must show their wisdom and sensibility when handling extreme situations, especially that revolve around religious sentiments.

They cannot be dealt with muscle power or by using force. The most disappointing aspect is everything happened in just a day after the so-called wall of women in the name of renaissance, stretching from one end to another of the state.

With aggressiveness and hard-line thinking nothing can be achieved, instead political leaders must realise that they are answerable to people who have voted them to power. How will they approach and justify their actions of belligerence and who will eventually be compensating loss of lives and properties?

A responsible government should ensure peace and stability in the state and people should have the freedom to move around.

They must realise that no one is going to win in this prolonged unrest that has already damaged public properties and homes worth millions in the past few days.
