2019 GC32 Racing Tour: Minoprio joins Oman Air
New Zealand sailor Adam Minoprio, the youngest skipper to win the World Match Racing title at 24 in 2009, has been roped in by Team Oman Air for the 2019 GC32 Racing Tour, which will be held over five venues.
The 33 year old Aucklander is an experienced helmsman and is one of the two new members of the squad for the new season, the other being British sailor Adam Piggott. The team has retained Pete Greenhalgh, Stewart Dodson and Nasser al Mashari while Phil Robertson and James Wierzbowski have left.
“Arguably Adam [Minoprio] is the most experienced helm out there,” said Greenhalgh, Team Oman Air’s project manager, tactician and mainsail trimmer. “He will bring another element of consistency in the windy conditions.”
Minoprio has also raced in the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup challenges. In addition, he was at the helm of the Danish-flagged SAP Extreme Sailing Team when it won the Extreme Sailing Series title in 2017.
The GC32 Racing Tour begins next month with the first round to be held in the Italian town of Villasimius in Sardinia from May 22-26 with the Villasimius Cup.
Team Oman Air is also supported by EFG Private Bank Monaco this season. The team will have the support of coach Marcus Lynch and the shore team of Hilal Zadjali and Max Richardson during the campaign.
