88 to vie for Muscat Open title at RAHGC

March 05, 2020

Oman's No 1 amateur and fivetime winner Azaan al Rumhi will be among the 88 golfers who will compete in the sultanate's oldest golf tournament – 47th Muscat Open – at the Ras al Hamra Golf Club (RAHGC) on March 6-7.

The prestigious amateur golf championship received an overwhelming response with the chief of the organising committee, Salim al Harthy, confirming registration of 121 entries. However, as the Ras al Hamra venue is a nine-hole course, the organisers could accommodate only 88 for the two-day event.

Yaseen Le Falher was the champion at the previous edition that was held at the same venue. The inaugural edition of Muscat Open was played in 1973 and M J Beaumont was the winner. Azaan holds the maximum record of five titles, the last of which he won in 2014, ten years after he won his maiden crown.

Le Falher is a two-time winner and posted a comfortable 11-shot victory last year with a gross score of 144. Ras al Hamra was originally opened in 1969 as a sand course but was redesigned by Graham Marsh and reopened as a grass course in 2014. It is the only floodlit course in Oman.
