A career-best eighth-place qualification saw Oman’s Al Faisal al Zubair's 2019 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup campaign get off to a great start in the opening round at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday.

The 21 year old, competing in the third season of the Supercup, produced a solid lap to make a strong start with P8 among the 28 drivers in the fray on the 4.655km circuit.

The  Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East champion, racing for the Lechner Racing Middle East, had impressed during a handful of laps in the practice session and he continued with his progress in the qualifying session, which was won by Julien Andlauer.

Speaking after the qualification, Al Faisal said, “I am very happy with my qualifying position. It is my best performance in the Porsche Supercup so far. I also had P8 in practice. I now need to make sure I stay in the front pack and stay with the drivers and hopefully finish in the top-eight tomorrow. It would be great start to my Supercup season.”

Earlier, the first practice session on Friday afternoon saw Andlauer set the fastest lap of 1min 48.883sec.

The Omani finished the session in impressive fashion with the eighth fastest time – a best lap of 1min 49.660sec – during his nine laps on the circuit.

Technical issues with the car prevented Al Faisal running for more laps during the practice session.

In the qualifying session on Saturday, Andlauer claimed pole with a best lap of 1min 47.869sec.

Rookie Ayhancan Güven was second and was sandwiched in by Andlauer’s teammate - BWT Lechner Racing’s third-placed Michael Ammermüller.

Al Faisal ran for nine laps during the qualifying session and clocked a best lap of 1min 48.631sec.
