Confident Al Faisal all set for Porsche Supercup campaign
Challenge Middle East champion Al Faisal al Zubair had a good testing session at the Catalunya circuit in Barcelona, Spain, last month, the venue of the opening round of the 2019 Porsche Supercup, which will be held from May 10-12. The 21 year old will be hoping that the encouraging results during the testing sessions along with his recent exploits in the GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East series, which he won for the second time in a row, will stand him in good stead as he launches his third season in the Supercup.
Held in conjunction with the European rounds of the FIA Formula One and a double-header finale in Mexico, the Porsche Supercup is considered to be the top-challenge in one-make championship racing.
Al Faisal will compete in all the rounds of the Supercup.
Having finished overall 16th last season among a field of 40 drivers, Al Faisal is determined for a much-improved show this time. His best finish last season was a 12th place twice, one in Monte Carlo and other in Hungary. He had taken part in eight of the ten rounds last season.
In the maiden season in 2017, Al Faisal had ended up overall 14th with his best performance, a ninth spot in Hungary.
Al Faisal said, “I am excited to take part in the Supercup after a successful Middle East campaign and some good testing sessions in Barcelona.
“My aim this year will be to finish among the top-eight drivers. It is going to be tough but I am ready for it. I need to make sure that I finish the races and earn as many points to boost my hopes for a top-eight finish.”
The Omani teams up with Walter Lechner Racing and will race along side defending Supercup champion and teammate Michael Ammermüller.
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup opener has been in Barcelona since 2013 and the circuit, which also hosted the pre-season testing session in April. Action gets underway with the free practice session on Friday evening. The first qualifying stint of the new season roars into life on Saturday and race one of the Supercup takes centre stage on Sunday and will be run over 14 laps.
