Action from the match between Dhofar and Al Suwaiq on Saturday

Record ten-time winners Dhofar Club moved closer to lifting to the 11th domestic league title after it recorded a 2-1 win over former champions Al Suwaiq at the Sohar Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Following the completion of the 19th round of the 2018-19 Omantel League on Saturday, Dhofar's win meant that it remained unbeaten in the season and has now extended its lead to 14 points at the top.

With seven matches remaining for the conclusion of the league and 21 points to fight for, Dhofar is undoubtedly in a pole position to lay hands on the trophy.

Its nearest rival and its arch-rival from Salalah, Al Nasr, is at second spot with 35 points following a hard-fought 1-0 win over this season's His Majesty's Cup semifinalists, Majees, at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) on Saturday.

The loss deepened Majees woes as it remains at the bottom of the league with 16 points, the same as Sur, which played a goalless draw on Friday against Sohar at its home ground.

Sur is currently preparing for the prestigious His Majesty's Cup summit clash against nine-time champions Fanja at the SQSC on Thursday.

Sur has won the prestigious crown three times, the last coming in 2008, while Fanja, attempting for its tenth title, won it last in 2014.

Earlier on Saturday, Oman scored a crucial 1-0 win over Mirbat but still stayed in relegation zone with 18 points to be placed 12th in the 14-team league.

Al Nahda and Al Arouba played out a draw at the Buraimi Sports Complex on Friday, a result that left the former rooted at third spot with 31 points while Arouba trails by five points at fourth place.

Arouba with 26 points has a better goal-difference than four other clubs – Sohar, Muscat, Mirbat and Saham – as the five clubs battle out in the mid-table.

Al Shabab posted a key 2-1 win over Muscat at the Seeb Sports Stadium on Friday to avoid the drop zone while Al Rustaq held Saham to a drab goalless stalemate at the same venue later in the evening.

Standings [after 19th round]: 1: Dhofar (49 points), 2 Al Nasr (35), 3 Al Nahda (31), 4 Al Arouba (26), 5 Sohar (26), 6 Muscat (26), 7 Mirbat (26), 8 Saham (26), 9 Al Suwaiq (25), 10 Al Rustaq (22), 11 Al Shabab (19), 12 Oman (18), 13 Sur (16), 14 Majees (16).
