Extreme Sailing Series: Oman Air finishes overall second
Team Oman Air failed to impress on the final day of the season as it slid from its overnight leader's spot to finish third in the seventh and final Act of the 2018 Extreme Sailing Series (ESS) in Los Cabos, Mexico, on Sunday.
The third-place finish saw Phil Robertson-skippered Oman Air secure a runner-up finish in the overall series, behind Alinghi.
It was the fourth series title for Alinghi after a remarkable final day. The feat makes it the joint most successful team ever to participate in the globe-trotting foiling circuit, level with former competitor, The Wave, Muscat.
Alinghi closed the grand finale in first place on the double points Act leaderboard – its five Act wins this year cementing it as victors in the overall rankings with 92 points.
Oman Air was runner-up with 83 and just managed to edge last year's champion SAP Extreme Sailing Team, which too had 83, based on Los Cabos Act scores.
On the last day, only four races could be held including the double-pointer final race.
Oman Air, which till the final day had been on the podium in all the previous eight races stumbled in the opening race on Sunday and was on the backfoot as it had two fourth-place finish.
In the third race, Oman Air managed a second but in the final double-pointer, it finished last to end the Act with 126 points.
Alinghi claimed the top honours in the final Act with 141 while Red Bull Sailing Team was second with 130.
Besides Robertson, the Oman Air crew comprised Pete Greenhalgh, Stewart Dodson, James Wierzbowski and Nasser al Mashari. “To have four days of such light winds is very unusual. To get second overall was a real achievement for us at the end of the season,” said Greenhalgh, Oman Air’s mainsail trimmer.
