Miqbali and Taghlib claim Oman Open squash titles
Salim al Miqbali outplayed Mutassim al Nofli 3-1 to claim the men's title at the 2019 Oman Open Squash Championship, which concluded at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Saturday night.
Mohammed al Battashi took the third place after defeating Mohammed al Barwani in the bronze-medal playoff match.
Young Taghlib al Barwani claimed the U15 title with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Abdullah al Barwani.
Egyptian Mohammed Omar won the third place with a win over Al Khalil al Kharusi.
The Oman Squash Committee, which had also introduced a competition for the U13 age-group, was forced to cancel it due to lack of good number of entries.
Sheikh Saif al Hosni, the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) vice-chairman, was the chief guest and gave away the trophies in the presence of Fahad al Hinai, the OSC chairman, and other officials.
The three-day championship was the maiden attempt by the OSC after it was set-up by a Ministry of Sports Affairs (MoSA) in January 2019. The championship witnessed an encouraging response with 40 players entering the fray in men's and U15 categories. Besides a large number of Omani participants, there were expat players from UK, US, Pakistan, India, Egypt and Qatar.
Speaking after the prize-distribution ceremony, Hinai said, “At the OSC, we are keen to organise more championships across the sultanate to encourage players to participate and develop squash as a sport. Our main focus is to lay a strong foundation for junior players, in particular, in the age-group of 10-12 years. We would like to create a strong national team, which in future can compete in the international competitions.”
