Oman Sail emerges first Diam World Tour winner
As Oman celebrated the 48th National Day on Sunday, Oman Sail joined the celebrations with a title win in the inaugural Diam World Tour as it was crowned champion on Friday.
The title victory was secured when Oman Sail finished second behind local boat Treasures of Tahiti in the Grand Prix Pacifique des Jeux, the third and final leg of the Tour, in Tahiti.
The Tour had begun in Oman with the EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour (SATT) from February 3-17 and was followed by the second leg in Tour Voile in France from July 6-22.
Oman Sail was led by skipper Stevie Morrison and the crew comprised Abdulrahman al Mashari and Quentin Ponroy in Tahiti.
The Oman Sail team ended its winning season ahead of Bernard Stamm’s Cheminees Poujoulat in second and the Beijaflore team who finished third.
Oman Sail had begun its campaign by finishing third in SATT and followed with a fourth-place in Tour Voile alongside co-skipper Thierry Douillard.
“It is very exciting to have won the first ever Diam World title for Oman,” said Mashari. “The race in Tahiti was very tough and long, a slightly different style from the Tour Voile and EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour with some extreme offshore legs.”
Morrison said, “It’s a real honour to win representing Oman. Along with Abdul, I have competed on all the legs in this competition, but of course this World Tour victory wouldn’t have been possible without our other teammates - Ali al Balushi, Thierry Douillard, Nick Asher, Mathieu Richard, Olivier Gandon, Loick and Suleiman. We're more than just the three of us on the boat and we couldn't have done this without the full team.”
As 2018 Diam World Tour winner, Oman Sail trimaran will now have a golden Diam symbol on its mainsail when it competes at the opening event of the 2019 season, EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour, which starts from Muscat in February.
