Oman U23 team off to a winning start
Oman edged past Nepal 1-0, thanks to Yousuf al Malki's goal on the opening day of the Group A qualifiers of 2020 Thailand AFC U23 Football Championship in Doha, Qatar, on Friday. Oman next plays Afghanistan on Sunday.
Qatar beat Afghanistan 2-0 in their opener in the same pool.
The qualifiers will see 43 teams jostling for 15 spots to next January's finals, which will also serve as the qualifying round for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
With Japan having confirmed its Olympic berth by virtue of being the host, three spots will be up for grabs in the AFC U23 finals in Thailand.
The 11 group winners and four best second-placed teams will qualify for the finals, with hosts Thailand receiving automatic qualification. In the event of Thailand finishing among the qualified teams to the finals (either top of the group or one of the four best second-placed teams), the next (fifth) second-placed team among all groups will qualify instead.
