Omani duo competes in Tour de Bretagne
It has been a mission close to Oman Sail and finally it succeeded on Saturday when two experienced sailors – Sami al Shukaili and Ali al Balushi – became the first all-Omani offshore team to compete in the 2019 multi-stage Tour de Bretagne à la Voile regatta in France.
Sailing in a Figaro yacht, the duo started the six-stage race on Saturday from the Saint Quai on the Bay of Saint Brieuc to Saint Malo, both in the Brittany peninsula. The Oman Sail entry has been named Majan. The regatta finishes next weekend in La Trinite sur Mer after stops in Brest, Concarneau and Larmor Plage.
The longest leg is over 300 nautical miles, racing between Saint Malo and Brest via Wolf Rock. The race has attracted 37 entries. The 12th edition of the race is a good test for sailors and Shukaili was excited to take part in the race. Ahead of the start he said, “This is the biggest event of the season and a true test of what we’ve learned so far.”
The team will benefit from the support of a shore team and the expert navigation and strategic advice of Oman Sail regular Thierry Douillard before each leg.
For the Oman Sail team, the event marks a milestone on the pathway to taking part in the double-handed Transat AG2R La Mondiale transatlantic race next year and a possible single-handed 2020 Figaro campaign.
