Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Al Faisal misses top-ten finish
The lack of practice sessions ahead of the race seemed to have affected Al Faisal al Zubair’s performance as the Omani missed a top-ten finish in the third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Red Bull circuit in Spielberg, Austria, on Sunday.
The 21 year old ended up overall 11th among a strong grid of 30 drivers under bright sunshine and with temperatures soaring to 32°C it made for challenging conditions. He had begun the race after qualifying 11th on Saturday. Despite missing a top-ten finish, which would have been his third successive top-ten this season, Al Faisal collected crucial points in the championship standings.
Al Faisal’s BWT Lechner Racing Team colleagues, Julien Andlauer and Michael Ammermüller, finished first and second overall and Andlauer closed the gap on his German rival at the top of the points’ standings.
Al Faisal said, “The race start was good and I managed to move up to ninth place. I felt the performance of the car was excellent and I could stay with the front pack. After that I started to compete with Tio Ellinas to gain an extra position, but my tyres started to wear out. I was glad to finish the race in such sweltering conditions, but I do feel that I could have finished higher. I am now looking to achieve a good result at Silverstone.”
Al Faisal started the 17-lap race with Andlauer leading the way in blistering summer temperatures from Larry Ten Voorde and Dylan Pereira. The Omani gained a couple of places to snatch ninth and after a few laps moved down to tenth, a position he kept till lap eight.
Al Faisal slid further on lap 13 as Ellinas got past him but managed to reach the chequered flag at 11th place.
The next round at the Silverstone circuit in the UK will be on July 11-13.
