Oman's Shihab Alaa Din Rizq Fayez failed to advance to the semifinals of the 50m freestyle swimming event at the third Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Tuesday after he finished 44th among the 54 swimmers.

Competing in heat 2, Shihab managed a second place with a time of 27.55s, which was just 0.05s behind the heat winner, Murray Macpherson of Malawi.

After the completion of the seven heats featuring 54 swimmers, the best 16 advanced to the semifinals. Egypt's Abdelrahman Sameh emerged as the fastest qualifier with 22.60s.

Shihab's next event will be the 100m freestyle race on Thursday.

Race delayed

Meanwhile, Mohammed al Balushi, the 17 year old Omani windsurfer, moved up a place after the jury revised the results on Monday following the third race.

Balushi is now placed overall 16th among 24 sailors in the windsurfer-Techno293+ event with 25 net points and a total of 47 points.

The start of the fourth race was delayed on Tuesday due to lack of winds. Organisers have scheduled three races for Tuesday.
